Ideological Manifestations in Kader Abdolah’s 2016 Qur’an Translation: An Analytical Study

There is substantial evidence that several Qur’an English translations present a distorted or misrepresented portrayal of its message. Abdolah’s 2016 English rendition provides a fertile ground for misinterpreting Islam. Departing radically from authentic acceptable norms in translating the Qur’an, the translator employs various (para)-linguistic, and translational elements to reframe the Qur’anic message to meet the expectations of the West. Drawing upon the theoretical frameworks of von Flotow (1991), Reiss (2014), and Baker (2007), an eclectic integrated model is suggested to examine how far Qur’anic verses have been manipulated to mislead Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The impact of (para)-linguistic variables on the final translation product and the selected translation strategies are collectively traced. The findings reveal that various interventionist translation strategies are amply utilised to achieve the translator’s ideological viewpoints. Profound ethical questions regarding the translator’s visibility, textual fidelity, and cultural appropriation are raised. Accordingly, the proactive involvement of authoritative Islamic institutions are advocated. The institutionalization of Qur’anic translation is recommended to safeguard it from unqualified translators.
