Abstract Conceptual mapping is a fundamental cognitive and communicative tool that services to understanding and interpreting complex concepts. In the context of editorial writing, mapping serves as an effective strategy for presenting arguments and ideas in a coherent manner. The current paper explores the types and nature of mappings, focusing on their roles in communication, and discusses how different mapping strategies influence the construction of meaning in the British and Chinese editorials. Additionally, it tackles the naming strategies of mappings, emphasizing their significance in clarifying relationships between concepts. Finally, the application of conceptual mapping is analyzed through selected editorials. These include British editorials from The Guardian and The Telegraph, as well as Chinese English editorials from Global Times and China Daily, all discussing the Russia-Ukraine war. The analysis focuses on how these editorials employ the conceptual mappings of the FIRE and MACHINE metaphors to convey their perspectives on the ongoing conflict.".
